“Pamela and I commissioned a 2-ton, 8-foot-high bronze sculpture for our living room. It was designed and built by Charlie Perry, a well-known and highly regarded American sculptor. When Pamela and I first saw the piece as a maquette, we asked Charlie what he was doing. He said, “I’m building equations in space.” I had taken courses at Harvard on multi-dimensional function spaces so I really tuned in. Charlie’s sculpture, two lines chasing one another, fills one entire cube in Johnson’s rectilinear space perfectly with both power and elegance. I never get tired of looking at it and it looks different from every angle as you walk around it and the house. Maybe I am stretching the metaphor, but I suggest again that marketers are space benders. They see the possibilities of new dimensions as well as new dimensions within old ones.”
